Israeli airstrikes killed at least 78 Palestinians on Monday, including 27 in the central and southern parts of Gaza. Since the war began on October 7th, 2023, the death toll has climbed to at least 58,386, with more than 139,000 injured.

Footage surfaced on Monday showing Israeli soldiers firing over the heads of Palestinians gathered at the Global Humanitarian Foundation’s (GHF) Al Shakosh food distribution site in Rafah. The video, filmed on Saturday, highlights the growing desperation over food access. At least 838 Palestinians have been killed while waiting for aid since the GHF began operations in Gaza in May.

In Gaza City’s Al-Tuffah neighbourhood, heavy shelling and airstrikes were reported Monday afternoon. A military helicopter and a low-flying fighter jet were seen overhead. The assault appeared to follow an ambush by Palestinian fighters targeting Israeli troops and armoured vehicles. Israel says 890 of its soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call on Monday for an immediate ceasefire, warning that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached “horrific proportions.” Speaking in New York, he urged the international community not to allow the suffering of Palestinians to be overshadowed by other global crises. “What we are witnessing in Gaza is a level of death and destruction that has no parallel in recent times,” he said.
