Climate Adaptation Summit

Published on: 25 January, 2021

The Netherlands hosts the world’s first Climate Adaptation Summit on an action plan to deal with the impact of climate change. The two-day online conference will be virtually attended by Angela Merkel, Sheikh Hasina, Emmanuel Macron, Boris Johnson, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. John Kerry, who U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s named as special climate envoy, is expected also be in attendance.

The summit comes after UN Secretary-General Guterres has called for more ambition, more money, and more concrete plans to deal with the impact of global warming, not only with means to prevent it.

Because of COVID-19, large amounts of funds have been allocated to deal with the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, leading to concerns that climate projects will be forgotten. That’s why the Netherlands wants to use this summit to make sure that large funds – such as the EU corona recovery funds – will be put in climate sustainable projects.
