A War on Witnesses

The war in Gaza continues to exact a devastating toll. Since dawn on Tuesday, at least 71 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes, bringing the total death toll into ever grimmer territory. Eighteen civilians were killed while queuing for food aid—yet another instance of fatal desperation amid Gaza’s spiralling humanitarian collapse.
Starvation is accelerating. Hospitals reported six new deaths from hunger in the past 24 hours, including two children. The total number of starvation-related deaths since the start of the war in October 2023 has now reached 223, of whom 103 were children.
The conflict claimed four more journalists this week. An Israeli strike on Sunday evening targeted a journalists’ tent outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, killing four Al Jazeera staff members—Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qirqea, Ibrahim Al Thaher, and Mohammed Nofal—along with three others. The attack prompted vigils and protests in cities including New York, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Ramallah, The Hague, Tunis, Manchester, and Berlin.
According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the death toll among Palestinian journalists now stands at 242 since October 7th, making this one of the deadliest conflicts for media workers in modern history.
As Israel continues its offensive, critics warn that not only is the civilian population being decimated—but the witnesses documenting their plight are also being silenced.
