Southern Africa, a region prone to drought, has had good rainfalls this season with governments expecting bumper maize harvests, the staple food in the region. In preparation for future droughts, some farmers in Zimbabwe are setting up seed banks in rural communities to store drought-resistant seeds. In lean years they will be able to borrow seeds from the banks as a loan, then repay the loan back with part of their harvest.
