Al Jazeera Media Network organized Wednesday a protest stand on the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh, Al Jazeera correspondent in Palestine, by the Israeli Occupation Forces.
AJMN said, “In a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms, the Israeli occupation forces assassinated in cold blood Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine, Shireen Abu Akleh, targeting her with live fire early this morning, Wednesday, May 11, 2022.”
Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head and killed early Wednesday.
She was on an assignment covering an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
A video aired by Al Jazeera shows Abu Akleh lying on the side of a road next to a wall.
Abu Akleh, 51, was born in Jerusalem.
She began working for Aljazeera in 1997.
AJMN interrupted its broadcast to announce her death.
Ali Samoudi, another Palestinian journalist, was moved to hospital after being shot in the back.
Both journalists were wearing jackets visibly marked with the word “PRESS
AJMN called on the international community to “condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for deliberately targeting and killing our colleague.”
“We pledge to prosecute the perpetrators legally, no matter how hard they try to cover up their crime, and bring them to justice,” AJMN said.
Samoudi, who was working as Shireen Abu Akleh producer, told The Associated Press they were among a group of seven reporters who went to cover the raid early Wednesday.
He said they were all wearing protective gear that clearly marked them as journalists, and they passed by Israeli troops so the soldiers would know that they were there.
Shaza Hanaysheh, a journalist with a Palestinian news website said in an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic Channel, that there were no clashes or shootings in the immediate area.
She said that when the shots rang out she and Abu Akleh ran toward a tree to take shelter.
Doha – May 11, 2022
In a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms, the Israeli Occupation Forces assassinated in cold blood Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine, Sherine Abu Aqla, targeting her with live fire early this morning, Wednesday, May 11, 2022, while conducting her journalistic duty, clearly wearing press jacket that identifies her a journalist, covering the Israeli Occupation Forces storming of Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
Al Jazeera Media Network condemns this heinous crime, which intends to only prevent the media from conducting their duty. Al Jazeera holds the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for the killing of the late colleague Sherine. It also calls on the international community to condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for their intentional targeting and killing of Shireen.
The Israeli authorities are also responsible for the targeting of Al Jazeera producer Ali Al-Samudi, who was also shot in the back while covering the same event and is currently undergoing treatment.
Al Jazeera extends its sincere condolences to the family of Sherine in Palestine, and to her extended family around the world, and we pledge to prosecute the perpetrators legally, no matter how hard they try to cover up their crime and bring them to justice.
