How Hungary’s Orbán uses control of the media to escape scrutiny and keep the public in the dark/AP
More than 90 journalists at MTI, Hungary’s state news agency, have signed an open letter demanding the immediate restoration of impartial coverage.
Their move follows the election victory of Peter Magyar, who has pledged to overhaul state media, long a mouthpiece for the outgoing government of Viktor Orbán.
The letter, obtained by Reuters, reflects simmering frustration among staff who say editorial independence has been systematically suppressed for years. Whether Magyar’s promises translate into genuine reform, or merely a change of masters, remains to be seen.
