UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet is due to release her long-awaited report on alleged human rights abuse in China’s Xinjiang region.

Her mandate ends August 31 and Bachelet said on August 25 that she is ‘trying very hard to release the report before then.

She said China and about 40 other countries had asked her to not publish the report.

China is accused of widespread abuse in Xinjiang – what the U.S. had branded a genocide.

Rights groups say that at least 1 million mostly Muslim minorities have been incarcerated in ‘re-education camps.

China denies the accusations and says it is running vocational training centres to counter extremism.

Bachelet visited Xinjiang in May, in a visit widely criticised as being too soft.

The outcome was an agreement to establish a ‘senior dialogue’ on human rights. – Bachelet has promised twice before – in September and December 2021 – to release the report.
