UN General Assembly holds an open debate on Russia’s veto of a draft UN Security Council resolution on cross-border aid to Syria.
Per a UNGA resolution adopted earlier this year, the General Assembly must meet whenever a permanent UN Security Council member uses its veto.
On July 8th, Russia vetoed a text proposed by Ireland and Norway that would have renewed authorization for cross-border aid deliveries via a checkpoint on Syria’s border with Turkey for one year.
The Council ultimately agreed on a six-month extension of the mechanism.
