Due to a severe drought and global food prices, approximately 250.000 people are facing famine in Somalia.

“The lives of the most vulnerable are already at risk from malnutrition and hunger, we cannot wait for a declaration of famine to act,” El-Khidir Daloum, the WFP’s country director in Somalia, said.

According to agencies around 3 million livestock have died in Somalia due to the drought since mid-2021.

About 800,000 Somali have left the countryside to seek help in camps, having lost their animals and crops.

They’ve joined hundreds of thousands of people who were displaced by previous droughts, in 2011 and 2017, who never recovered their livelihoods.

In general, the horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in 40 years. The UN says 14 million people in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are at risk of starvation.
