Muslims Protest Against the Indian Government’s Move to Amend the Muslim Waqf Law

Published on: 24 November, 2024

Muslim organisations have announced a protest march against the Indian government’s move to amend the Muslim land endowment law locally called the Waqf Law.

The changes in the law are being deliberated by a joint parliamentary committee amid opposition from the Muslim groups and opposition parties.

The changes to the Waqf law are being touted by the government as a major move to reform the management of properties associated with mosques and other Muslim endowments.

Muslim organisations and opposition parties have been saying that the changes could give sweeping powers to the government and threaten the management of these community y owned properties.

Waqf boards—which manage the endowment properties— in the states are among the top landowners in the country.
