A unique community of descendants of freed slaves is seeking official recognition, from Kenya’s government, as an ethnic group. Freetown, in the port city of Mombasa, was created nearly 150 years ago by missionaries, to house enslaved people who had been rescued following a British ban on the Indian Ocean slave trade.
