DR Congo’s declared a day of national mourning after flooding and landslides killed at least 215 people in the country’s east, almost half of them children.
Hundreds are still missing.
South Kivu has been the hardest-hit area since rainfall began on May 4th.
At least two villages by Lake Kivu – Bushushu and Nyamukubi – were submerged when rivers burst their banks. Bad weather and a lack of equipment are hampering recovery efforts.
Across the other side of Lake Kivu in neighboring Rwanda, at least 130 people died on May 2nd due to floods and
mudslides.
