A current cholera outbreak is overburdening hospitals in Cameroon’s South-West region.

The towns most affected are Limbe, Buea and Tiko, near the Nigerian border.

2500 cases of cholera have been registered in just five days (until MARCH 29) in the South-West region of Cameroon.

With more than 1000 cases, Limbe is the town most affected.

Due to a lack of beds, the local hospital set up tents to treat over 240 cholera patients.

According to the latest figures, there have been at least 40 deaths since the beginning of this year, and at least 10 more on top of that between March 21-and 29 in the South-West region.

The government has announced a vast vaccination plan.

Cameroon’s Public Health Ministry says water shortages and poor hygiene have spread the bacterial disease throughout half the country.
