At least 50 people were killed over the weekend in the north-eastern state of Taraba. Locals, however, claim the death toll is higher, with many others receiving treatment in hospitals.
The violence began in Bandawa but quickly spread to the nearby villages of Mungalelau and Mungadoso in the Karim Lamido council area. Half the residents of Mungalelau have since fled the village. The attack followed another incident two weeks ago in which two farmers were killed.
Several days ago, Amnesty International’s Nigeria office informed the Associated Press that it had verified 140 deaths in the predominantly Christian local government areas of Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi in Plateau State. The figure is based on information gathered by field workers and local officials, although residents fear the toll may be higher, with some people still missing.
