Gaz War ramifications

Published on: 11 December, 2023

Israel is recruiting farm workers from East Africa, to plug the gap left by a mass exit of other foreign workers.

Kenya is to send 1500 farm workers. Israel says it is also seeking to hire from Uganda and Tanzania.

Malawi, in southern Africa, has sent more than 200 farm workers.

More than 10,000 foreign farm workers have left Israel since October 7.

Israel has also barred Palestinian workers, who made up nearly 20% of the farm labour force before the war.

Kenya’s government says the workers will earn $1500 after tax a month, more than double the average Kenyan salary.

But there’s concern over worker safety and treatment.
