Mozambique’s ISIL

Published on: 21 March, 2021

The UN’s refugee agency is due to hold a briefing following a recent visit to Mozambique’s troubled northern region, Cabo Delgado. Violence blamed on ISIL-affiliated armed groups has displaced almost 670,000 people since the trouble began in late 2017 and left more than 2000 dead.
UNHCR says the slow response by Maputo and the international community risks fuelling the crisis. It says high poverty levels in the gas-rich region have made it easy for armed groups to recruit.
