Right to self-determination/ Kashmir

Published on: 5 January, 2021

Dozens of Kashmiri activists in Pakistan rallied in the capital Islamabad on Tuesday, urging the United Nations to guarantee self-determination for people living in the territory.

They chanted slogans against India and demanded action against what they described as human rights violations on the part of Indian authorities in Kashmir.

The territory is split between Pakistan and India but is claimed by both in its entirety.

The rally came as people in Kashmir marked the anniversary of a UN resolution in 1948 that called for a plebiscite in Kashmir so that people could decide whether they wanted to merge with Pakistan or India, or if they wanted to live as an independent state.

But the resolution was non-binding and has never been implemented.
