Cleric Detention/Indonesia

Published on: 31 December, 2020

Today, Thursday is the end of 20 days in police detention for Rizieq Shihab, the controversial leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

The detention can be extended, if the police require more time to prepare evidence for prosecutors.

-On Wednesday the Indonesian government announced that the Islamic Defenders Front is banned from conducting any activities and the use of their name and symbols is prohibited

Indonesian police arrested cleric Shihab on December 19 for allegedly violating coronavirus restrictions during the staging of several mass gatherings since his return from self-exile in Saudi Arabia last month.

In 2008, Shihab was imprisoned for inciting violence.

He had left Indonesia in 2017 after facing charges of pornography, and insulting state ideology.
