The Israeli Supreme Court convenes in Jerusalem for hearings on petitions against the Nation-State Law that the Knesset passed in 2018.
This is a basic law that specifies the nature of the state of Israel as a nation-state of the Jewish people where self-determination is unique for Jews.
The law is seen by Palestinian Israelis as racist because it excludes their collective right to self-determination in the same country.
Given this bill was passed at the Knesset, the Supreme Court in Israel may say that this is a political matter, it was voted in and passed three readings and the court cannot intervene in this.
This is one option. Another option is the opposite, that it is unconstitutional (although there is no constitution in Israel but a collection of basic
laws that function like a constitution) and therefore the Court could strike it down (unlikely to happen).
We don’t know when a decision will be since the hearing on TUE is the first one on the matter.
