Day one of a posthumous appeal hearing on behalf of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi who was convicted of playing a key role in the bombing of PanAm 103 over Scotland in 1988.
Megrahi – found guilty in 2001 of mass murder and jailed for life with a minimum term of 27 years – was the only person convicted.
This appeal against his conviction was lodged after the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) referred the case to the High Court in March, ruling a possible miscarriage of justice may have occurred.
The Megrahi family lawyer will join the hearing via video link from Glasgow.
Megrahi appealed unsuccessfully against his conviction in 2001.
He was granted leave for a second appeal in 2007 but subsequently withdrew it.
Megrahi was released from prison on compassionate grounds (he had terminal cancer) after serving eight-and-a-half years of his sentence.
He died in Libya in 2012, still maintaining his innocence.
The hearing is listed for four days.
