West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court, Hong Kong: Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong faces five years in jail if convicted Monday of inciting unlawful protests last year.
The protests were triggered by the now-aborted Fugitive Offenders amendment bill, which would potentially have led to the extradition of Hong Kong citizens to mainland China.
There’s a chance Wong and a second pro-democracy activist, Ivan Lam, could be imprisoned immediately.
Monday is set for closing statements and possible sentencing if found guilty.
The defendants can appeal. It would be Wong’s fourth time in prison.
A third defendant, Agnes Chow, has already pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on December 1st .
