Fighting continued on near the strategic town of Sake, around 15km from the regional capital Goma.

Thousands of people fled the town on Thursday after hearing gunfire and fearing an advance of the M23 fighters.

Sake is the last connection on the highway from Goma to the northeastern region of the country.
