The death toll from floods and mudslides in South Africa’s coastal KwaZulu-Natal province has risen to more than 440 people, According to Reuters.

Official valued the overall infrastructure damage at more than 10 billion rands ($684.6 million).

The government has declared a state of disaster in the region.

More rain is expected.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited affected families on Wednesday promising help from the government.

“Everything is a harsh reminder of what we lost, and not being able to find (Bongeka) is devastating because we can’t grieve or heal. At this stage we are left feeling empty,” Lethiwe Sibiya, 33, told Reuters.
