Pakistan/Farmers’ suffering

Published on: 12 May, 2024

Farmers in Pakistan are suffering huge losses in income due to what they say are mismanaged wheat imports, that have resulted in a wheat surplus falling prices, and that’s despite a record harvest.

Tens of thousands of farmers held protests in several cities early in May against government’s decision not to buy their wheat, causing
them huge losses in income.

The Punjab government’s strategy has adversely affected the farmers in Punjab, which is Pakistan’s largest province and regarded as the “breadbasket” of Pakistan.

Agriculture is considered the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, which contributes to 23 percent of the GDP.
