Mass evacuations and regional aid Mozambique’s National Directorate for Water Resources Management warned of imminent risk of Senteeko Dam collapse in neighbouring South Africa, urging evacuations in Magude, Xinavane and Josina Machel Island, Maputo province.

Severe flooding has affected more than 645,000 people across the country; the confirmed death toll over the past two weeks stands at 13 but officials expect it to rise as waters recede. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) estimated on Friday that approximately 4,000 people still require rescue in inundated districts including Magude, Manhiça, Chókwè and Guijá.

The United Kingdom dispatched search-and-rescue teams on Tuesday and Thursday to support Mozambican authorities, underscoring an international response to a fast-moving humanitarian emergency.
