In Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council holds a high-level dialogue on atrocity prevention, with remarks by the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. The adviser, whose role includes identifying risks and advocating early action, addresses the Council as global concern over rising violence, particularly in the Middle East, intensifies. The session, broadcast via UNTV, forms part of ongoing UN efforts to strengthen mechanisms for preventing mass atrocities.
The adviser highlights the need for greater international coordination and early-warning capabilities. Several member states echo calls for stronger intervention mandates and improved accountability systems, citing crises from Sudan to Gaza.
In Madrid, demonstrators gather in the late afternoon to protest against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Civil society groups organise the rally, with support from several left-wing parties. Protesters wave Palestinian flags and demand an immediate ceasefire, accusing Israel of using disproportionate force. They also call on the European Union to take a firmer stance.
The protest remains peaceful but reflects growing public frustration across Europe. Similar demonstrations take place recently in London, Berlin, and Paris, signalling increasing mobilisation over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
