The European Union (EU) is temporarily suspending funding for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia, in reaction to an UN investigation which found widespread diversion of funds, according to Reuters and media outlet Devex.
The investigation concluded that landowners, local authorities, members of the security forces and humanitarian workers were all involved in stealing aid.
WFP and USAID suspended food aid in Ethiopia in June, for similar reasons, where hunger-related deaths have increased since.
WFP Chief Cindy McCain tweeted that WFP has been forced to end aid for 2.6 million people in Somalia, due to lack of funding.
In 2022, the European Commission provided over USD 7 million in aid to WFP’s operations in Somalia, a fraction of the donations of more than USD 1 billion it received, UN.
WFP says 6.6 million people are facing acute food insecurity in Somalia.
