March 20th  is the latest deadline from Eastern African forces for the armed group M23 to withdraw from territory in DR
Congo’s northeast, under a plan brokered by the regional bloc the East African Community.

The M23 has ignored EAC deadlines to withdraw and is not expected to meet this latest demand.

The consequences were not explained.

M23 forces had declared a ceasefire two weeks ago to make room for a political process.

The European Union, France, and the U.S. have endorsed UN reports that Kigali backs the M23 and have called on the Rwandan gov’t to stop support to the armed group. Kigali denies the charge.

Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan have deployed troops to the region, North Kivu. Angola is sending soldiers
in the coming days.

Renewed fighting between the Congolese army and various armed groups has displaced 300,000 people in February alone, according to UNHCR.

Since MAR 2022 – conflict across North Kivu has forced more than 800,000 people to flee from their homes.
