As aid agencies continue to struggle to get aid into Ethiopia’s Tigray region, the UN has warned that millions are
facing famine-like conditions and a looming catastrophe.

OCHA has called on all parties to allow the movement of aid into the region, where it said 5.2 million people, or 90% of the population, urgently need humanitarian assistance.

Last week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate end to violence with food warehouses now empty in Tigray’s capital, Mekelle.

The 9-month conflict is widening.

The TPLF said AUG 11 it had allied with the Oromo Liberation Army, an armed group from the nation’s largest ethnic community.

Thousands have died and more than two million people have been forced to flee their homes.

“The security and human rights situation in Ethiopia deteriorated as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed struggled to maintain order amid growing unrest and political tensions. The rights landscape was defined by ongoing abuses by government security forces, attacks on civilians by armed groups, deadly violence along communal and ethnic lines, and a political crisis,” Human Rights Watch said.  https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2021/country-chapters/ethiopia
