YEZIDI RIGHTS

Published on: 2 March, 2021

Iraq’s parliament passed landmark legislation Monday to grant rights and compensation to survivors from the country’s Yezidi religious minority. More than 5,000 Yezidis were killed when ISIL swept through their ancestral region of Sinjar in 2014. About 7,000 women were kidnapped and forced into slavery. The bill was submitted to parliament in 2019, but voting was repeatedly delayed, drawing criticism from survivors and rights groups.
