More than 38,000 women and girls have been killed by Israeli air bombardment and land operations, according to UN Women, a toll that amounts to at least 47 deaths per day over the course of the conflict.

Of those killed, at least 22,000 were women and 16,000 were girls. A further 11,000 have been injured, many with life-altering disabilities. The true toll is almost certainly higher. Many bodies remain trapped under rubble. According to Gazan health authorities, overall Palestinian fatalities have surpassed 72,315, with more than 172,137 injured.

The social consequences compound the demographic ones. Tens of thousands of households are now headed by women who have lost husbands and must sustain families without income, without support and without access to essential services. Even six months into the ceasefire announced in late 2024, conditions in Gaza remain critically fragile. UN Women’s Sofia Calltorp cited women who were compelled to deliver babies in the street for lack of transport to functional hospitals.

UN Women is calling for strict adherence to the ceasefire, respect for international law, and scaled-up humanitarian assistance, with women’s organisations represented in any reconstruction and decision-making process.
