The Supreme Court in Seoul

Published on: 14 January, 2021

A possible end to a lengthy legal saga of former president Park Geun-hye, who was removed from office amid massive demonstrations over a corruption scandal in 2017. The Supreme Court in Seoul will uphold or overturn a lower court’s order of a 20-year prison sentence in a retrial of two cases of corruption and influence-peddling that led to the removal of ex-president Park Geun-hye from office in 2017. This includes her conspiring with her longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil, to force big conglomerates, such as Samsung, to donate $71.1 million to two foundations under Choi’s control, and accepting off-the-book funds from three former chiefs of the National Intelligence Service. If the top court upholds the 20-year jail term for the first two cases, she would have to remain in prison till 2039 for her combined 22-year jail term.
