Somalia’s military has partnered with other nations, civilians, and even the country’s warlords to retake territory held
for years by the armed group Al Shabaab.
The government claims to have retaken 70 towns and villages in Hiran, central Somalia in recent months — its biggest
gains in at least five years.
It’s now widening the offensive, to attack Al Shabaab strongholds in the south.
Analysts question whether the government can hold the territory and whether its alliance with rival, notoriously feuding, warlords will backfire.
