Aljazeera Center for Public Liberties and Human Rights at Aljazeera Media Network organized a panel discussion on the topic “Media Freedom & Safety of Journalists”. This event took place in Nouakchott, on Sunday, June 12th, 2022 in collaboration with the Union of Mauritanian Journalists and the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region.

Aljazeera Center for Public Liberties and Human Rights stated that “It’s high time that we highlight the necessity to combat the killing of journalists and end impunity for perpetrators. We need to act in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the United Nations Human Rights Council, related to the safety of journalists, in addition to the recommendations of UNESCO in this respect.

Over the decades, AJMN has played a major role in the international media arena. Benefiting from its correspondents’ network AJMN is providing an impartial coverage of events and current affairs focusing on armed conflict zones and natural disasters. AJMN endeavors to enhance the general public’s right to information. Confidence in the media houses, democracy, human rights and the rule of law are major concerns of AJMN.

As a result of exposing violations of human rights, adhering to press freedom, making the voice of victims heard, shining a light on the challenges of sustainable development, peace-building and reporting on wars, AJMN employees have paid a heavy price for carrying out their professional journalistic duties. The latest crime that shook the world was the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh, martyr of press freedom, who was shot in the head by the occupying forces while she was on an assignment in Jenin refugee camp in the occupied west bank.”
