Kashmir/Civilians’ rights

Published on: 17 March, 2021

Security forces in Indian Administered Kashmir are accused of blowing up houses that host rebels or where a rebel is trapped during the fighting. After a gunfight on Monday where 2 rebels were killed, Indian security forces set at least 6 houses on fire.

Many in the locality are now left without a home. Analysts claim that security forces are changing their strategy to deal with rebels. Critics describe the move as a ‘measure of collective punishment.

House owners are denied any financial relief by the local government and are often accused of helping and ‘providing shelter to the rebels’. Security officials say this new strategy helps them finish the gunfights quickly and ensure that civilians are not killed.
