An Israeli airstrike on Gaza City early, Today, Tuesday killed more than two dozen people who were sheltering at a school, hospital officials confirmed. The attack was part of a broader Israeli airstrike campaign across the Gaza Strip that resulted in at least 413 deaths, including many women and children.
The airstrikes broke a ceasefire that had been in place since January, escalating tensions and threatening to reignite the 17-month-old war. The school, Al Tabaeen, had previously been struck multiple times during the conflict, and those sheltering there were left terrified.
“People were peacefully sleeping, preparing for suhoor, and suddenly they woke up to death,” said Fedaa Heriz, a displaced Palestinian staying at the school. “The injured find they’ve lost their mothers and daughters and are left with nothing but destruction. How long will this go on?” she added.
Majid Nasser, another person seeking shelter at the school, described hearing the airstrikes and then rushing to help when his family screamed for help. “I found children trapped under the rubble, unable to help them,” he said.
The Israeli government ordered the strikes in retaliation after Hamas refused Israeli demands to modify the terms of the ceasefire. The operation was deemed open-ended, with expectations it may expand further.
The White House has expressed support for Israel’s actions, confirming it had been consulted beforehand. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for eastern Gaza, particularly the northern town of Beit Hanoun and surrounding areas, suggesting ground operations may be imminent.
The attacks, which took place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, are likely to escalate a conflict that has already caused immense loss of life and widespread devastation in Gaza. The strikes have also raised concerns about the fate of approximately two dozen Israeli hostages believed to still be held by Hamas
