The International Day observance will take place online today, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Eastern Standard Time (EST.)

The date marks the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.

Today, the world will focus on the “Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.”

“The preservation of indigenous peoples’ communities, values and ways of life depend on indigenous women and girls regaining their roles as leaders within their communities, a group of UN experts,” said Monday

The United Nations Human Rights Special procedures urged the US to ensure leadership roles for indigenous women.
