Published on: 9 December, 2020

This is the first election in the country during the pandemic.

Around 100 million people are expected to vote.

Chairperson of the Covid-19 mitigation task force, Doni Monardo, said 17 out of 270 regions holding the regional heads election or Pilkada 2020 are at high risk of virus transmission.

Many parties objected to the election being held amid the pandemic.

However, the government and the election organizers were determined to prove their confidence in containing the pandemic.

Among the candidates in the polls are members of the political dynasties: The son and son-in-law of the current president Jokowi who is running for mayor in Solo Central Java and Medan, North Sumatra.

The daughter of the vice president is running for mayor in South Tangerang and the niece of the minister of defence Prabowo Subianto who is running for vice mayor of South Tangerang.
