The Indian government announced on Monda it has set out the framework to allow to fully implement a controversial
citizenship law, that was first passed five years ago.
The law is seen as anti-Muslim and discriminatory and was passed in 2019 allowing Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees, such as Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains as well as Christians from Muslim-majority Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who arrived in India before December31, 2014.
Influential students’ groups and opposition parties in Assam have said that they will protest the government’s move.
India’s Interior minister says he’s assured that the law will not take away anyone’s citizenship and Muslims shouldn’t worry.
