Aljazeera Centre for Public Liberties and Human Rights hosted a vital discussion on journalist safety titled “Journalist Safety: How Long Until We End the Killings and Impunity?” on October 9, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Geneva time at the International Conference Center in Geneva.
The session emphasized the need for stronger international legal frameworks to protect journalists from targeted violence and to hold perpetrators accountable.
The session covered several key topics, including the time and effort required to stop journalist killings and end impunity, as well as the lack of robust international condemnation for the numerous journalist deaths in Gaza.
Participants discussed initiatives to enhance journalist safety, particularly in high-risk areas, and examined existing international and regional legal mechanisms for protecting journalists in conflict zones and how to strengthen them.
The group also assessed the current effectiveness of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and addressed the persistent lack of accountability for those responsible for journalist assassinations, highlighting specific cases such as Shireen Abu Akleh.
