“The international community must increase pressure on Myanmar‘s military rulers in the wake of their decision to move ahead with death sentences against four individuals, including two prominent opponents of the regime,” UN independent human rights experts said. https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/06/1120152
“Myanmar ruling military on Thursday defended a planned execution of two prominent democracy figures as lawful and required, defying international criticism for resuming capital punishment after a three-decade hiatus,” Reuters said.
Death sentences are to be carried out in the coming days against two prominent anti-coup activists amid international concern over the military’s plans to move ahead with the country’s first executions in 30 years.
Earlier this month, the US and France criticised the action against veteran activist Ko Jimmy and former legislator Phyo Zeya Thaw, whose cases were heard by a secretive military tribunal.
After being arrested in towns in which the junta has declared martial law, Ko Jimmy and Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw were sentenced to death on terrorism charges in January by a military tribunal for on charges of “masterminding” armed resistance operations in Yangon.
