Western governments have faced accusations of hypocrisy, highlighted by their inconsistent responses to Israel’s conflict, especially when compared to Washington’s firm stance against Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

This inconsistency has undermined the credibility of U.S. administrations, which frequently reference the concept of an “international rules-based order.”

In Israel’s case, many Western governments have expressed strong support and emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself, often downplaying civilian casualties.

In contrast, the response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been characterized by widespread condemnation, calls for sanctions, and a focus on protecting Ukrainian sovereignty and civilian lives.

This disparity raises questions about the principles guiding these responses and whether they truly align with the idea of an “international rules-based order.”
