Brazil is hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, marking the first time the country has taken on this significant role. Officially, Brazil has outlined three key priorities for the summit discussions: combating hunger, poverty, and inequality; promoting sustainable development; and reforming global governance.

However, the global spotlight is also on what changes the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump will bring to both domestic and foreign policies, as well as the broader international landscape. Attention is also focused on the ongoing global conflicts, including the war between Israel and Gaza, the situation in Lebanon, and the war in Ukraine.

The G20, comprising 19 member countries—Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Russia, Turkey, the UK, and the U.S.—as well as two regional entities, the African Union and the European Union, represents about 85% of global GDP, over 75% of world trade, and roughly two-thirds of the world’s population.
