The oceans have been a powerful ally in combating global warming, absorbing nearly 93 percent of the carbon dioxide released by human activities since 1970. But the rise in temperatures and discharge of pollutants has created a series of “dead zones” – oxygen-depleted areas each measuring tens of thousands of square kilometers, where no plant or animal life can survive.
