Chile indigenous rights

Chile’s government is under pressure to declare a state of siege in the southern region of Araucania. President Sebastian Pinera says he will not rule it out and is asking Congress to approve tougher anti-terrorism legislation to deal with armed groups carrying out attacks in the region where indigenous Mapuches have been demanding the restoration of ancestral lands. Chile’s state-run Institute of Human Rights says excessive and “illegitimate“ use of force and abuse of rights of children are being carried out by security forces.
