Burkina Faso election

Violence blamed on groups linked to ISIL and Al Qaeda, government and vigilante forces has displaced more than a million people and left thousands dead.

Much of the north and the east will be off-limits for campaigning or voting.

More than 400,000 couldn’t register to vote after the government ruled it unsafe.

The election will be the second since the coup in 2014.

Incumbent Roch Marc Christian Kabore is running again, so too his main challenger in 2015, Zephirin Diabré. Other candidates include Isaac Zida, the army officer who took charge following the coup.

Zida’s been in self-imposed exile in Canada since 2016, and faces charges for desertion should he return
