South India is in the midst of an unprecedented water crisis. A weak southwest monsoon owing to El Nino has substantially affected the groundwater and depleted the Cauvery River basin reservoirs.

Water shortage has led to long queues in some areas with residents having to pay almost double for water as households and offices rationing use.

The crisis is also impacting industries with reports of a slowing production as many employees are spending their time seeking water supplies rather than attending work.

The city is facing a shortfall of 1500 million liters per day. The state government has capped tanker prices and allocated additional funds to deal with the crisis, but the situation is unlikely to improve in the coming days.

Bengaluru is home to about 14 million people and is India’s major I.T. which including thousands of startups and international firms like Walmart and Google.
