India’s Supreme Court bench hears appeals on petitions that challenge restrictions on Muslim women from wearing hijab/headscarves inside educational institutions in the south Indian state.

A 2 judge Supreme Court bench last year gave a split verdict on a High court order that wearing a headscarf was not an essential religious practice in Islam, therefore isn’t protected by India’s constitution, which guarantees religious freedom.
