Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing is to deliver a speech as his troops parade through the capital, a show of pomp despite widening opposition to his rule at home and abroad.

March 27th  marks the founding of the national army during WWII, traditionally a day of national pride.

But it’s also the second anniversary of a crackdown on opponents to Hlaing, in which more than 100 protesters were killed.

Hlaing seized power in February 2021 after ousting the elected, civilian government, and declaring a state of emergency.

More than 3000 people have been killed since then and more than a million displaced.

Various countries have slapped sanctions on the junta, so far with little obvious effect.

The general counts China and Russia among his close allies.
