Aid Agencies Are Struggling To Get Into Ethiopia’s Tigray Region

Published on: 9 December, 2020

On Wednesday, Prime Minister of Ethiopia Dr. Abiy Ahmed travels to Kenya for his first foreign state visit since the conflict in Tigray began.

During the two-day state visit, both leaders will inaugurate a series of bilateral projects.

The UN said on Friday that fighting continued “in many parts” of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, complicating efforts to deliver humanitarian aid despite an agreement granting the UN access to territory under federal control.

Aid agencies are struggling to get into Ethiopia’s Tigray region, more than a week after the government agreed to provide access to the areas it controls.

Hundreds have been killed since the fighting began November 4, and more than a million are thought to have been displaced, including close to 50,000 who have fled into neighboring Sudan.

Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed insists the military phase of the operation is over. But his government confirmed December 8 some forces loyal to the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front are still fighting.

Addis also confirmed on December 8 that its forces had fired on a United Nations team visiting the region, claiming it had broken through two checkpoints.
